Sarah J. Hale letters, 1850-1855.

Hale writes to an unidentified man, 29 April 1850, regarding biographical essays for her publication, Woman's record, or sketches of distinguished women (1853); to the astronomer William Mitchell, 18 December 1850, thanking him for a biographical essay he has sent about his daughter for inclusion in Woman's record; and to Mr. Slauffer, 13 April 1855, critiquing his poem, "The Well of Isadore," for The Lady's book. Also, includes an engraving of Hale and one of Louis Antoine Godey, publisher of The Lady's book.

Sarah Josepha Hale, née Sarah Josepha Buell, (born Oct. 24, 1788, Newport, N.H., U.S.—died April 30, 1879, Philadelphia, Pa.), American writer who, as the first female editor of a magazine, shaped many of the attitudes and thoughts of women of her period. Sarah Josepha Buell married David Hale in 1813, and with him she had five children. Left in financial straits by her husband’s death in 1822, she embarked on a literary career.
